At Nordic Sleep by Fossflakes, our goal is to be 100% PFAS-free by 2024

At Nordic Sleep by Fossflakes, our most important task is to ensure you and your family a good and healthy night's sleep. Our products must be of the highest quality, and you should feel confident using them.

All our duvets, pillows, and support pillows are free from PFAS, accounting for 99.7% of the products our customers purchase.

Only our dog beds and outdoor pillows contain PFAS, which makes them water- and dirt-resistant. The amount of PFAS is so low that it is virtually undetectable, and the fabric is certified to OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 Class 1. This means that direct skin contact with the pillows is not harmful to human health, even for infants.

In early 2023, the EU published a proposal to ban the use of PFAS by 2027. Nordic Sleep by Fossflakes supports common standards such as this and has decided to be entirely PFAS-free by the end of 2024, and ideally sooner.

This means we are currently working with our suppliers to find alternative materials for our dog beds and outdoor pillows.

Our outdoor pillows and dog beds are treated with PFAS C6, which has shorter carbon chains. The longer the carbon chains, the harder it is to break down the substance – which is why PFAS are also known as forever chemicals. Experts consider C8 and above to be the most problematic, as these are the hardest to break down.

As soon as we find a PFAS-free material that meets our quality and performance standards, we will put it into use and become 100% PFAS-free.

Why don't you stop selling products containing PFAS immediately?

PFAS is the substance that makes the fabric on both the dog beds and outdoor pillows water- and dirt-resistant. This is a feature that many of our customers ask for – so we naturally want to be able to offer it. Untreated pillows will only last a few months before they become too dirty or develop mould and need to be replaced.

The OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 certification also confirms that skin contact with the treated fabric is not harmful to human health. For the general public, exposure to PFAS most commonly occurs through drinking water and food.

I have purchased Nordic Sleep by Fossflakes products containing PFAS – can I get a refund?

Which Nordic Sleep by Fossflakes products are PFAS-free?

If you have been sleeping with Nordic Sleep duvets, pillows, or support pillows, you can continue to do so with complete confidence. PFAS has only been found in the fabric of our dog beds and outdoor pillows.

Does Fossflakes have a sustainability programme?

Yes, we have had a sustainability programme in place since 2021. Our employees, management, and board are committed to improving Nordic Sleep by Fossflakes' sustainability efforts and communicate openly about them.
