3 tips: How to choose the right pillow
Choosing the right pillow is essential for a good, uninterrupted night’s sleep. That’s why it’s worth considering a few key factors before ordering your new pillow. The perfect pillow should support your neck so that your cervical spine aligns naturally with the rest of your spine. Read on to make sure you choose the pillow that’s right for you.
How do you sleep?
Do you sleep on your side, on your back or on your stomach? This is actually one of the most important questions to ask yourself when choosing a pillow.
If you sleep on your side, your pillow should fill the space between your shoulder and your ear to keep your spine straight. As a side sleeper, you’ll usually need a firmer pillow that provides enough height to support your head comfortably.
If you sleep on your back, you’ll need a pillow with less filling. This helps keep your head and neck aligned and reduces strain on your neck. Sleeping on a pillow that’s too high when lying on your back can increase the risk of neck pain and snoring.
If you sleep on your stomach, extra attention to neck support is important, as stomach sleeping can place strain on the neck. If you’re unable to switch to sleeping on your side or back, we recommend choosing a very low pillow – or possibly sleeping without one.
How firm is your mattress?
Your mattress also plays an important role in choosing the right pillow. If you sleep on a soft mattress, your body sinks down more, which means you’ll generally need a lower pillow.
If, on the other hand, you sleep on a firm mattress, your body doesn’t sink in as much. In this case, a higher pillow will usually provide better support.

What is your body type?
You’ve considered your sleeping position and your mattress – now it’s time to think about your body build.
If you’re smaller or have narrow shoulders, you should generally choose a low pillow.
If you’re taller or broad‑shouldered, a higher pillow will usually give you better support.
If you need extra support for your neck or shoulders, one of our special pillows – such as the Chiropractic or SideSleeper pillow – may be the right choice for you.
