From film set to the world's best sleep
Like so many of the world's greatest inventions, it was also a happy coincidence that led entrepreneur and civil engineer Lars E. Foss to discover what would become Fossflakes. The story begins, of all places, on a film set…
One day, Lars E. Foss finds himself on a film set. A retired entrepreneur and civil engineer, he has continued to produce artificial film snow of the highest quality for films, TV series, commercials, and shop displays – and today his artificial snow is being used for a shoot. Along the way, he notices how some of the young machine operators on the film crew are taking a nap, leaning up against the sacks of Lars' film snow.
This sets Lars' inventive mind in motion – a mind that has always sought new, creative solutions to all manner of problems. Because Lars is a true inventor.
The pursuit of a good night's sleep
But Lars E. Foss is also a man with sleep problems. He is a light sleeper – far too light. At times, he suffers from outright insomnia. On top of that, he is troubled by tense and aching muscles that make it difficult to find a comfortable sleeping position. And he is always in search of the perfect sleeping temperature.
So when he returned home from the film set later that same day, he brought a bag of his film snow with him. He went straight to the bedroom, filled the snow into an old pillowcase – and slept absolutely wonderfully the entire night.
The world's best night's sleep had been born.
Snow meets down – and becomes Fossflakes
Of course, it is not the original film snow that you sleep on today when you purchase a pillow or duvet from Nordic Sleep by Fossflakes.
Lars E. Foss refined the light flakes so that they would suit their new purpose as pillow and duvet filling. Amongst other things, he worked out how to eliminate the faint rustling sound that the artificial snow produced – because your pillow and duvet have no need to 'talk' to you throughout the night.
And then there is the arc – borrowed from the natural shape of down and feathers. The arc creates air pockets that both insulate and allow moisture and heat to evaporate, whilst also providing long-lasting and stable volume. This means you will never again need to spend an entire night fluffing up your pillow.
Hello America!
Being the inventor that he was, Lars could not help but continue developing his new pillows. He experimented, amongst other things, with blending Fossflakes with fine polyester fibres, allowing him to create varying degrees of softness and resilience.
This paved the way into the American hotel industry in 1993, where the durable pillows – easy to wash and dry – proved a great success. Hotel guests too were enthusiastic about the new Danish pillows, and before long they were being sold to private customers as well.
A new generation of Foss
As well as having inherited his father's rather too light a sleeping disposition, Adam Foss has also inherited the development gene. He therefore took over Fossflakes in 2005, and has since been working to further develop and expand the product range. In collaboration with physiotherapists, chiropractors, and sleep experts, Fossflakes has amongst other things launched a range of support pillows, and today you can also find duvets, baby and junior products, and covers – all created with respect for you, your family, the environment, and Denmark's proud tradition of craftsmanship.
