The most important thing in your bed is your pillow
Forget your partner, your children, your dog—or even your duvet. The most important thing in your bed is actually your pillow.
Your pillow helps ensure that your head, neck, and shoulders rest in the correct position, which supports proper alignment of your spine while you sleep. And when your body is properly supported at night, you wake up feeling more rested, comfortable, and energised.
If you’ve ever slept on a pillow that didn’t match your sleeping position, you already know how important the right pillow really is. You may wake up with a stiff neck, sore shoulders, or discomfort in your back or hips—and above all, without feeling properly rested. Those are the mornings when you start looking forward to bedtime again the moment you wake up.
Your sleeping position determines the right pillow for you
When you speak with our in-store specialists or contact Nordic Sleep by Fossflakes customer service for guidance, we always begin with the same question:
How do you usually sleep?
We ask this because pillows are not one size fits all. Your sleeping position plays a key role in choosing the pillow that provides the best support and comfort throughout the night.
For example, if you prefer sleeping on your stomach, using the wrong pillow can affect both your comfort and your spinal alignment. That’s why choosing the right pillow—and getting the right guidance—makes such an important difference.
Below, we’ll help guide you towards the perfect pillow for your sleeping position.
Do you sleep on your side?
Most people sleep on their side. Studies from the United States show that around 54% of people fall asleep in a side-sleeping position—and like many people, you may even have a preferred side.
Side sleeping is generally considered a healthy sleeping position, especially when your spine remains aligned. Chiropractors often recommend keeping your arms in front of your body rather than under your pillow to help reduce strain on your neck and shoulders.
Solution:
If you sleep on your side, you’ll typically benefit from a firmer pillow with sufficient height. Ideally, your pillow should match the distance between your ear and shoulder.
The Nordic Sleep SideSleeper pillow is a great option, as it helps maintain a stable side-sleeping position and supports proper alignment throughout the night.

Do you sleep on your stomach?
Many people sleep on their stomach as children—and some continue this habit into adulthood. However, stomach sleeping can place extra strain on the spine because the neck is often turned to one side for extended periods.
Solution:
If you sleep on your stomach, a softer and lower pillow—or sometimes no pillow at all under the head— is often the best choice. Placing a pillow under your abdomen or pelvis can also help reduce strain on your lower back.
The Nordic Sleep by Fossflakes Medium-Low pillow is designed with this sleeping position in mind and is available in both sustainable and conventional versions.

Do you sleep on your back?
Many chiropractors consider sleeping on your back to be one of the most supportive sleeping positions, as it helps maintain a neutral spinal alignment and supports healthy posture during sleep.
Solution:
If you sleep on your back, a lower and slightly softer pillow is usually recommended to help keep your head and neck aligned with your spine. If you experience neck discomfort, however, you may benefit from additional support.
The Nordic Sleep Chiropractic pillow, developed in collaboration with chiropractors, is designed for both back and side sleepers. It provides targeted support and can be adjusted depending on how the pillow is positioned.
