How Balance makes your sleep more sustainable

At Nordic Sleep by Fossflakes, our mission has always been to give you the best possible sleep – so you can wake up rested and ready to live your best life. But a good life is also about the choices we make and the impact they have on the world around us. Not least when it comes to how we produce fibre‑filled pillows and duvets.

That’s why, for many years, we have dreamed of filling our pillows and duvets with a more sustainable material – without compromising on the quality of sleep you know and love from Nordic Sleep by Fossflakes.

The result is Nordic Sleep by Fossflakes Balance: a great night’s sleep with respect for the planet we live on. The two pillows and two duvets in the Balance collection are made using 66% environmentally responsible materials, and we are, of course, working towards increasing that figure even further.

Sugarcane and sleep

Our unique Fossflakes are made from polyethylene. In its conventional form, polyethylene is derived from fossil‑based raw materials that place a strain on the environment. Today, however, a more sustainable alternative exists – made from plant‑based fibres derived from sugarcane.

Using this new material, we have carefully tested and developed a more environmentally responsible filling blend that retains its shape and loft throughout the night.

We call it Fossflakes Bio. It is made from 52% plant‑based, sustainably sourced polyethylene, and in the Balance collection the filling consists of 60% Fossflakes Bio combined with 40% regenerated polyester fibres.

Nordic Sleep by Fossflakes Balance – a more sustainable life cycle

It’s not only the filling in your Balance products that is more environmentally responsible. From raw materials to end of life, we have carefully considered the footprint our pillows and duvets leave behind. Here’s how:

Raw materials

The combination of sugarcane‑based plastic and regenerated fibres helps reduce the use of virgin oil. At the same time, the organic cotton cover requires fewer pesticides and chemical treatments during cultivation. Fibre filling is also the natural choice for anyone who prioritises animal welfare, lives a vegan lifestyle, or simply needs an allergy‑friendly alternative to down.

Production

Green promises mean little if products are made in factories that ignore labour rights and regulations. All Nordic Sleep by Fossflakes products are produced in Denmark, at our factory in Skive, which fully complies with all applicable standards and regulations and is subject to ongoing inspections.

Purchase

Global overproduction places a significant burden on the environment. That’s why we invest in thorough training for our retail partners, enabling them to guide you towards the right pillow or duvet. This reduces the risk of poor purchasing decisions – and of products that end up being discarded too soon.

Use

The buy‑and‑discard culture is one of the most climate‑damaging behaviours of our time. Thankfully, Nordic Sleep by Fossflakes pillows and duvets are designed with an exceptionally long lifespan. Fibre filling retains its shape and support for longer than, for example, down – and all our products are easy to wash and dry.

End of life

How you say goodbye to your Nordic Sleep by Fossflakes pillow or duvet also matters. That’s why every product comes with clear guidance on correct disposal. Proper incineration helps reduce overall CO2 impact and ensures that the product is handled in the most responsible way possible.
