Natural is always best – isn’t it?
Imagine standing in front of a shelf of pillows. Like many people, you may instinctively see down as the most environmentally friendly choice – precisely because it’s a natural material. At the same time, you might view synthetic fillings, such as Fossflakes’ fibre flakes, as a compromise. But intuition can be misleading – and even the best intentions can sometimes lead to less sustainable choices.
Nordic Sleep by Fossflakes – a better choice for the environment
A scientific life‑cycle analysis shows that Nordic Sleep by Fossflakes pillows perform better than down pillows on 16 out of 18 environmental parameters. In practical terms, choosing Nordic Sleep by Fossflakes helps reduce CO₂ emissions, lower water consumption and limit the use of agricultural land.
Down isn’t as green as we once thought
Producing down and feathers requires far more resources than most people realise. Ducks and geese must be bred and fed, which involves farming, land use and water consumption. Once the feathers are collected, they must be thoroughly washed and disinfected before they can be used in pillows and duvets.
The entire process demands significant amounts of energy, water and land – placing a substantial burden on the environment. What may seem like the most “natural” choice doesn’t always turn out to be the most sustainable one.

We thought natural was best, too
To be honest, for many years we believed that nature’s own materials must be the best choice for the environment. We fully expected down and feathers to come out on top in a life cycle assessment. But after a year‑long study, verified by an independent third party, the results surprised us: Nordic Sleep by Fossflakes pillows have a significantly smaller environmental footprint than pillows filled with down and feathers.
Choose based on facts – not gut feeling
You can now choose Nordic Sleep by Fossflakes pillows with confidence, knowing they are better for you, for the environment, and for future generations.
When comparing our pillow with a similar down‑and‑feather pillow, Nordic Sleep by Fossflakes achieves:
- 33% lower CO2 emissions
- 131 litres of water saved
- 90% less land use
Your choice makes a difference
It’s easy to think that the choice of a single pillow won’t make much difference. But when you bring a Nordic Sleep by Fossflakes pillow into your home, you are helping to reduce the strain on the planet’s natural resources. If we all make decisions based on solid knowledge rather than assumptions or gut feeling, we have the potential to create real and necessary change. Together, we can inspire others and move towards a cleaner, more sustainable future.
A world first: learn more about the analysis
At Nordic Sleep by Fossflakes, our ambition is to offer high‑quality pillows with the lowest possible CO2 footprint. That’s why, in 2023, we initiated the world’s first full life cycle analysis of our pillows. The goal was to calculate the complete environmental impact of our best‑selling pillow and compare it with both other fibre pillows and pillows filled with down and feathers.
To ensure full accuracy, the analysis follows a complete “cradle‑to‑grave” approach – meaning that everything is included, from raw material production and manufacturing to use and end‑of‑life disposal.
Independent and precise analysis
Accuracy and impartiality have been essential throughout the process. The life cycle assessment was conducted in accordance with international standards (ISO 14040 and ISO 14044) and reviewed by independent LCA experts from the Danish Technological Institute and Rambøll Group, with input from leading down pillow manufacturer DYKON.
The analysis was finalised at the end of 2024 and is based on a full year of in‑depth research. The result is a report of more than 140 pages, representing the most detailed environmental study of pillows ever carried out.
