The original Comfort-U

Our customer service team is often contacted by disappointed customers who believed they had purchased a genuine Comfort-U body pillow—but quickly realised that the support and comfort they expected simply weren’t there. In most cases, it turns out they had unknowingly bought an imitation. Unfortunately, copies are rarely large or supportive enough to match what the original Comfort-U is designed to deliver.

For us, the biggest concern is the many customers who purchase these copies in good faith and are left without the comfort and support they were promised.

The original Comfort-U was created through a collaboration between American nurse Jean Kelly and Danish inventor Lars E. Foss. Jean had the idea for a pillow that could help provide comfort and support for people living with conditions such as arthritis and fibromyalgia—conditions she experienced herself.

Because sleep was often difficult, she built a nest of pillows around herself every night. That experience inspired the idea for a large body pillow designed to support the entire body.

Jean met Lars – and Comfort-U was born

Jean created an early prototype and experimented with different types of filling, but finding the right material proved difficult. Down felt too firm and expensive, while traditional fibre fillings felt too flat and warm.

Then she met Danish inventor Lars E. Foss, who introduced her to the fibre flakes now known as Fossflakes®. When Jean tested the small flakes, they proved ideal: supportive enough to maintain their shape throughout the night, yet breathable enough to help maintain a comfortable sleeping temperature.

Since 2000, we have produced the original Comfort-U body pillow at our factory in Skive, Denmark. The pillow was introduced to the Danish market in 2002 and has remained one of the leading body pillows ever since. Something we are truly proud of.

Why it’s worth avoiding copies

When customers are disappointed after purchasing an imitation Comfort-U, it’s not just because they didn’t receive the original—it’s because copies rarely provide the level of support they promise.

Demand for supportive body pillows increased significantly during recent years, as more people discovered how comforting a Comfort-U pillow can be—especially during times when closeness and everyday routines were disrupted.

We believe it’s both disappointing and misleading when body pillows are sold with promises they cannot live up to. That’s why we’ve created this guide to help you recognise the original Comfort-U before making your purchase.

How to recognise the original Comfort-U

We occasionally see both our images and product descriptions used when copies are marketed—sometimes even by otherwise reputable retailers. This means it’s easy to purchase an imitation without realising it. Here’s what to look for:

1. The filling
None of the copies we’ve seen contain original Fossflakes® filling—or the same filling volume as the authentic Comfort-U. This makes a noticeable difference in support and comfort.

2. The size
The original Nordic Sleep by Fossflakes Comfort-U measures
158 × 87 × 30 cm. Known copies are typically smaller.

3. The signature fabric pattern
The small white stars on the cotton fabric are a distinctive Fossflakes® feature and are not present on known copies.

4. Labels and origin
Look for the Nordic Sleep by Fossflakes logo on the care label and the Made in Denmark label with the Danish flag. All Nordic Sleep by Fossflakes products are manufactured at our factory in Skive.

5. The price
Although Comfort-U is sometimes available at promotional prices through our retailers or webshop, authentic offers are rarely significantly below the usual price level. If a price seems too good to be true, it often is.
