Junior duvet – choose the right duvet size for your child

Junior duvet size – how to choose the right duvet for your child

The standard size of a junior duvet is 100 × 140 cm, designed specifically for children under the age of approximately five.

Choosing the correct duvet size helps support your child’s comfort and sleep quality. As a general guideline, when your child reaches around 90 cm in height, it may be time to consider switching from a baby duvet to a junior duvet.

Always choose a duvet that matches your child’s age, size and sleeping environment.

Junior duvet dimensions

The standard size of a junior duvet is 100 × 140 cm, while a matching junior pillow typically measures 40 × 45 cm.

A junior duvet is therefore both longer and wider than a baby duvet, which usually measures 70 × 100 cm. The pillow size is often similar, although baby pillows are typically flatter.

Choosing the right duvet size helps ensure uninterrupted sleep by preventing your child from becoming too warm under a duvet that is too large—or too cold if the duvet is too small to provide proper coverage.

Junior duvet or baby duvet? Choosing the right size

A good night’s sleep is essential for your child’s wellbeing. While restless nights are a natural part of life with young children, choosing the right duvet size can help create better sleeping conditions.

Many parents ask when it’s time to switch from a baby duvet to a junior duvet.

A helpful rule of thumb is to choose a duvet that is at least 10 cm longer than your child’s height, allowing them to pull the duvet comfortably around their body during sleep.

When children reach approximately 80–90 cm in height—often between ages 1 and 2—it is typically a good time to move from a baby duvet to a junior duvet.

Junior duvet size generally suits children until they reach around 120–125 cm in height, which is often between 6 and 7 years old. After that, most children are ready for a standard adult duvet.

When should your child move to an adult duvet?

Adult duvets are typically 200, 210 or 220 cm long, even though most people are shorter than that. The extra length makes it easier to wrap the duvet comfortably around the body during sleep.

If using an adult duvet for a child, we recommend choosing a lighter duvet, such as a summer or spring duvet, to prevent overheating.

Many children transition to a junior duvet around the same time they move from a cot to a junior bed—often between 2 and 3 years of age, or when they can no longer lie comfortably stretched out in their baby bed.

Switching to junior duvet bedding

Moving from a baby duvet to a junior duvet also means switching to bedding that matches the new duvet size.

As children grow older, they often begin developing their own preferences—perhaps choosing bedding with favourite colours, themes or characters. This makes the transition a natural opportunity to update their bedroom environment to match their personality and age.

Both the duvet and bedding should be washed regularly—bedding more frequently than the duvet—to help maintain a hygienic and allergy-friendly sleeping environment.

With young children, accidents can happen, so it’s a good idea to choose a junior duvet that can withstand frequent washing without losing its shape or comfort. Always follow the washing instructions to ensure long-lasting performance.
