How to find the pillow that suits you
Few things influence your sleep as much as your pillow. One night with your neck in the wrong position can affect how you feel the entire next day. That’s why your pillow should match you, your body, and your sleeping position—and why there is no such thing as a one-size-fits-all pillow.
Here, we guide you in finding the right pillow so your head gets the rest it deserves.
Your sleeping position is something personal—and completely natural. It has developed over time and is most likely the position in which you sleep best. That’s why your pillow should adapt to your sleeping position—not the other way around.
By answering these three simple questions, you’ll be better prepared to choose the right pillow.
Which filling suits you best?
When choosing a pillow, the filling plays a key role. The right choice depends on which type of comfort matters most to you.
Fibre
Standard fibre pillows are typically filled with polyester fibres or fibre balls. They are lightweight and usually medium-soft—but generally not as soft as down pillows.
Fibre pillows often need replacing more frequently, as they tend to lose their loft faster over time.
Fossflakes®
Nordic Sleep by Fossflakes pillows belong to the fibre category—but our unique filling shares many of the advantages associated with down.
Our pillows are lightweight, allergy-friendly, maintain their shape throughout the night, and are easy to wash and dry. The filling distributes evenly and can easily be reshaped by simply shaking the pillow.
In addition, our pillows are constructed to allow air to circulate freely, helping prevent overheating and keeping your sleeping temperature comfortable throughout the night.
Down
Down pillows are lightweight and soft, typically filled with duck or goose down—often blended with feathers and other filling materials.
Allergy-friendly down pillows do exist, but lower-quality down that has not been cleaned properly may trigger allergic reactions in some people.
Latex
Latex pillows are typically firm and hold their shape well. However, they cannot be reshaped in the same flexible way as fibre or down pillows.
Contoured pillows designed to support a specific sleeping position are often made from latex. Latex is naturally resistant to dust mites and therefore suitable for many allergy-sensitive sleepers.
Memory foam
Memory foam pillows have become increasingly popular because they relieve pressure and adapt to the shape of your body.
However, memory foam retains heat efficiently. If you tend to feel warm during the night, this type of pillow may feel too warm.
How do you usually sleep?
Side sleeper
If you sleep on your side, you will typically need a firmer and higher pillow. Choose a pillow that roughly matches the distance between your ear and your shoulder to help keep your spine aligned.
Back sleeper
If you sleep on your back, a lower and slightly softer pillow is usually the best choice, helping keep your head and neck aligned.
If you experience neck discomfort, however, you may benefit from additional support.
Stomach sleeper
If you sleep on your stomach, a **very soft pillow—or sometimes no pillow at all under your head—**may be the best option.
Placing a pillow under your stomach or pelvis can help reduce strain on your lower back.
How firm is your mattress?
Your mattress also plays an important role when choosing the right pillow.
Since your pillow needs to compensate for how much your body sinks into the mattress, the firmness of your bed affects how much support your pillow should provide.
If you sleep on a firm mattress, a softer pillow is often the right choice. If your mattress is very soft, a firmer pillow will usually provide better support.
