6 reasons why you’ll love linen

A remarkable natural material

That’s how we would describe linen—and exactly why we chose this beautiful textile for our first linen cushion collection.

Inspired by Nordic nature and the changing seasons, linen fits perfectly with the values of Nordic Sleep by Fossflakes. It feels comfortable against the skin, helps regulate temperature, and is a natural material with a long local tradition. In short, there are many reasons to love linen—discover them below.

1. Cool in summer, warm in winter

Linen fibres are naturally hollow, which means linen fabric contains tiny air pockets. These help keep you cool on warm summer nights and comfortably warm during colder seasons.

In fact, the effect is similar to what you experience with Nordic Sleep by Fossflakes duvets and pillows, where the down-inspired Fossflakes® filling creates small air chambers that both insulate and allow moisture and heat to escape.

This makes linen a comfortable choice throughout the year.

2. A material rooted in Nordic nature

Linen is woven from fibres derived from flax plants—beautiful plants known for their delicate blue flowers that bloom across northern landscapes during summer.

The linen fabric itself contains no synthetic fibres. This means you and your family can rest your head on cushions made from a textile that comes directly from nature. For us, that makes a difference you can feel.

3. A more responsible material choice

Because flax grows naturally in northern climates, it generally requires fewer resources than many other textile crops. It typically needs little irrigation and limited use of pesticides or fertilisers.

Our linen is grown and woven in Lithuania, a country with long-standing traditions of producing high-quality linen. This also helps reduce transport distances compared to globally sourced materials—something we like to think of as fewer sleep miles.

4. Linen is naturally durable

High-quality linen, like the material we use, is exceptionally durable. It performs well both indoors and outdoors and maintains its colour beautifully over time.

Linen also shares some of wool’s naturally refreshing qualities. If your cushion cover needs freshening but isn’t dirty, simply hang it outside—perhaps in a cool evening breeze—and it will often feel ready to use again the next day.

5. Easy to wash and care for

Velour, wool and leather are popular cushion materials—but none are as easy to care for as linen.

Simply place your cushion covers in the washing machine (remember to turn them inside out and close the zipper) and wash at 40°C without fabric softener. Linen dries quickly, either outdoors or in a tumble dryer.

If you prefer a smoother finish, the covers can also be ironed. Over time, linen naturally becomes softer—part of its charm.

6. A material that returns naturally to the cycle

Even the best products eventually reach the end of their lifespan—including linen cushion covers.

When that time comes, linen is biodegradable. You can compost the cover (after removing the zipper) or dispose of it together with other textile materials for recycling at your local recycling centre.
