The original Comfort-U

Fossflakes’ customer service is often contacted by upset consumers who think they have purchased a genuine Comfort-U body pillow, but who can’t understand why it doesn’t provide the support, comfort and pain relief they were promised. It soon turns out they have purchased an imitation or counterfeit product, and unfortunately they are never large or firm enough to provide the benefits offered by our original Comfort-U-https://www.fossflakes.com/dk/shop/stottepuder/kropspuder. For us, the biggest problem is all those consumers who purchased their pillows in good faith, but who have been left in the lurch.

The original Comfort-U was a collaboration between an American nurse, Jean Kelly, and a Danish inventor, Lars E. Foss. Jean had an idea for a pillow that could relieve pain and alleviate serious conditions like arthritis and fibromyalgia, which she herself suffered from.

This made it very difficult for her to sleep, and every night she would build a “nest” of pillows, which gave her the idea for a large support pillow that would encircle the entire body.

Jean met Lars – and Comfort-U was born

Jean sewed a prototype pillow and tested a lot of fillings, but it was hard to find the right one. Down became too hard and was expensive, while fiber became too flat and warm.

But then she met Lars, who told her about the fibers we know today as Fossflakes. Jean Kelly tested the little flakes – and they worked perfectly: They were firm enough to support her through the night and fluffy enough to keep her comfortable.

That’s why we have been producing the original Comfort-U body pillow at our factory in Skive, Denmark, since 2000. The pillow hit Danish shelves in 2002 and it’s been the leading body pillow in the country ever since. We’re very proud of that.

Why you need to watch out for counterfeit products

The reason why customers are upset about buying a counterfeit product is more than just having purchased an imitation Comfort-U. It’s more to do with the fact that we've never seen a counterfeit pillow that does what it promises: Namely, to relieve and soothe a body that is in pain and needs support. And unfortunately, the problem only worsened during the pandemic, because more people discovered how wonderful a Comfort-U body pillow can be when we can’t cuddle our loved ones.

Of course, we think it’s both sad and unethical to sell body pillows that don’t provide the support and pain relief they promise, and that’s why we’ve created this guide on how you can spot a counterfeit before you part with your money.

What to look for if you want to buy the real Comfort-U

We often find that both our images and product descriptions are used to sell copies – sometimes by otherwise reputable Danish retailers. So you may easily have purchased, or will at some point purchase, a counterfeit pillow in good faith. Here are some things to look for:

1. None of the copies we have seen contain the original Fossflakes fill or have the same amount of fill as the original Comfort-U, which means they don't provide the same level of support. And that’s the whole point of a body pillow.

2. The genuine Fossflakes Comfort-U is a large support pillow measuring 158 x 87 x 30 cm. All known copies have been smaller than the original.

3. The small white stars on the cotton fleece are a Fossflakes hallmark and have not yet adorned any of the replicas.

4. Also look out for the Fossflakes logo on the pillow's wash label and a label with the Danish flag underneath that reads “Made in Denmark”. All Fossflakes’ products are manufactured at our factory in Skive, Denmark.

5. Although the Comfort-U body pillow is occasionally on sale at our retailers or in our own online shop, the best deals are rarely under DKK 1000. So if a price seems too good to be true, it usually is.

6. Of course, the best thing to do is to buy Comfort-U from us here in our own online shop. That way, you can be completely sure that your body pillow is genuine and it’s easy to get in touch with us if you should have any issues.
