The most important thing is your pillow

Forget about your significant other, your kids, your dog – or even your duvet (yes, we said it!). The most important thing you have in your bed is actually your pillow! This is because it helps ensure that your head, neck and shoulders are in the correct position, which in turn ensures that your back is in the correct position while you sleep. And a body that has slept “correctly” wakes up more rested and energized.

Once you’ve slept with a pillow that doesn't match your sleep position, you'll know why the right pillow is so important for your sleep. You wake up with a stiff and aching neck, sore shoulders and perhaps a sore back or hips – and above all, completely unrefreshed. These are the mornings when you start longing for bed the moment you open your eyes.

Your sleep position determines your pillow match

When you speak with retail staff in stores or call Fossflakes’ expert customer service team for pillow advice, the first question will always be “what is your sleep position”? That’s because pillows are by no means one size fits all, and your sleep position helps determine which pillow is right for you.

For example, if you like to sleep on your stomach, there are actually pillows that not only cause poor sleep, but also risk resulting in chronic neck and back pain. That’s why it's so important to get good advice when choosing your next pillow.

Our guide to the perfect pillow – for you!

Do you sleep on your side?

The majority of us are side sleepers. American studies show that 54% of people prefer sleeping on their side (and if you're like us, you probably have a favorite side, too). While side sleeping is fine, chiropractors recommend that we ensure a neutral spine. Also, try putting your arms in front of you instead of under the pillow – this relieves pressure on your neck and shoulders.

Solution: When lying on your side, you need a firmer pillow that offers a certain height. Opt for a pillow that is as thick as the distance between your ear and your shoulder. The Fossflakes SideSleeper pillow is a great choice because it also ensures you stay on your side instead of sliding around on your back or stomach.

Do you sleep on your stomach?

Most of us sleep on our stomachs as children and adolescents, and some of us carry this unhealthy habit into adulthood. But what's wrong with sleeping on your stomach? Well, sleeping in this position puts you at risk of developing spinal problems. When you lie on your stomach, you force your neck to ‘rest’ in odd positions that can cause your spine to twist – sometimes resulting in upper back and neck pain.

Solution: Stomach sleepers often need a soft pillow, or even no pillow, under their head. On the other hand, a pillow under the abdomen and pelvis can prevent back pain. Try Fossflakes’ Medium Low pillow, available in both sustainable and conventional versions.

Do you sleep on your back?

Chiropractors generally recommend sleeping on your back because it helps you achieve a neutral spine and is generally the key to better posture.

Solution: When sleeping on your back, you will usually need a flatter pillow to ensure your head and neck are aligned. You can also opt for a softer pillow unless you experience neck pain. In that case, you’ll need a little extra support. The Fossflakes Chiropractic pillow is designed by chiropractors and created for both back and side sleepers. It provides the right support in a pillow that is both firm and soft, depending on how you turn it.
