If you care about the planet and future generations, which pillow should you choose?
Isn’t natural always better?
Most of us assume down is the eco-friendly option. After all, it’s a natural material. Meanwhile, a synthetic filling, like Fossflakes, might seem like a compromise. But assumptions are often wrong and can lead to harm, even when your intention is to do good.
Fossflakes is the better environmental choice
Scientific analysis reveals that Fossflakes pillows outperform equivalent down-feather pillows across 16 out of 18 environmental measures, slashing carbon emissions, saving water, and reducing land use.
Down isn’t as green as we thought
The production of down and feathers is resource heavy. It demands raising ducks and geese, producing animal feed, and washing and disinfecting feathers. All of which requires considerable energy, water and land, resulting in a significant environmental impact.
We too believed that natural was better
We once believed that natural was better, too. We expected down-feather to have the environmental edge. But after a year-long study, verified by independent experts, the results surprised us: Fossflakes significantly outperforms down-feather pillows in environmental impact.
Make your choice based on facts, not assumptions
Now you can choose Fossflakes knowing our pillow is better for you, the environment and future generations.
Compared to an equivalent down-feather pillow, our pillow has:
Your choice makes a difference
By switching to Fossflakes, you’re helping reduce the strain on natural resources. It’s a small step, but when we all make decisions based on science rather than assumptions, those small steps add up to a big impact.
Together, we can inspire change and create a healthier, more sustainable future.
About the study – a world first
We want to offer the lowest carbon-footprint premium pillows, and in 2023, we set out to conduct the world’s first life cycle assessment (LCA) of pillows. Our goals was to measure the full environmental impact of our top-selling pillow compared to pillows with polyester and down-feather fillings.
To ensure a comprehensive analysis, the study included the full ‘cradle to grave’ life cycle – everything from raw material production to manufacturing, usage and disposal.
Impartiality and accuracy
Accuracy and impartiality were critical to our approach. The LCA was conducted according to global standards (ISO 14040 and 14044) and reviewed by independent LCA experts at the Danish Technological Institute and Rambøll Group, with input from a leading down pillow manufacturer, DYKON.
After a year of thorough research, the study was finalized in late 2024, resulting in a report of over 140 pages, providing the most detailed environmental analysis of pillows ever conducted.
